Last year was my foray into the world of sowing seeds. When I moved to my recent address, I was thrilled by the size of the backyard. I've been yearning to start a garden for years, but being an apartment dweller has been prohibitive. Finally! My time had arrived. Knowing my kitchen faced the East, it didn't take me long to figure out what I needed to do.
I started by simulating a greenhouse effect by covering little pots with sandwich bags. This worked remarkably well. Plus my boyfriend built me shelves for my windows so I could expand my crop. As I arrived home everyday to inspect the progress of my seedlings, it became abundently clear that I was going to need to upgrade. Just as I was about to abandon the idea of finding an indoor greenhouse, I received a text message from my BFF. She found one at Ann & Hope. OH JOY! It was the last one and it was all mine.
Sowing seeds for the first time was an interesting and rewarding learning curve. Even with all my nuturing it was still a challenge. For every success there was also a failure, but I learned alot. This year I started much earlier. It takes a long time for the plants to reach maturity. Some seeds are more high mainteance than others. For example I recommend soaking morning glory seeds in water for 2-3 days before planting. They are ready to be planted when you see the root breaking through the pod. Sowing seeds at the right depth is crucial to their growth as well. Some flowers are just easier than others. I had the best results with Zinnias.
