My Secret

Having a passion for singing has always been my little secret. My earliest memory is of me pretending that I was a famous recording artist.    My record player was my recording studio and the caps to my Tinker Toy canisters were my headphones. I'd spin records by Shaun Cassidy, The Bee Gees, and Rick Springfield.  Donna Summer was my favorite.

This affinity for singing perpetuated into my teen years.  I'd stand in my bedrom infront of my mirror like it was my audience.  With my mousse can firmly in grasp, I'd belt out tunes with wild abandon by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. I remember being in the car one afternoon with my father singing along with the radio.  At the end of the song, he turned and said to me, "If you devoted as much time to school as you do to memorizing song lyrics, you'd be a straight A student.".  Oh well! By this time it was too late.  Studies just weren't as fun as music.  I got my driver's license and my recording studio went mobile.  Me and my best friend would cruise around all night with the windows open singing Journey songs.

I wish I had pursued singing more seriously, but I was always afraid.  Afraid of the stage and afraid of being criticized.   Instead I chose safer musical interests to thrive in like dance and color guard.  Singing in a way will always be my little secret.  It has always come from a  place, deep down in my soul.  A special place that no one can reach, but me.

me too.. I love singing. My mom says I am tone deaf. The first time I sand Karoke LAST YEAR (I'm 36) everyone I worked with was silent, watching me. they said I was awesome. The second and final time, same song, in front of my mother. Terrible. I'll never do it again.
