Adventures in Baking

A couple of weeks ago I baked my first calzone. I didn't have a recipe but, I thought how difficult could it be, so I made my own. For the filling I bought chicken sausage, orange pepper, tomato basil spaghetti sauce, and reduced fat shredded cheese. I usually don't eat reduced fat cheese, but the Sargento brand that I brought was surprisingly good.

I truly believe, whenever possible, to simplify cooking. Instead of making a dough from scratch, I bought Pillsbury's pizza crust dough. In hindsight, it wasn't a great idea. It tasted terrible. As the saying goes, if at first you don't succeed, try try again. Last week I searched the frozen freezer section and found a dough. WARNING! If you've never defrosted a frozen dough, be sure to read the directions. I was remiss in defrosting the dough a week before I intended to bake it. You see, while dough is defrosting, it expands. Needless to say, it burst right out of the package. Nevertheless, that didn't seem to ruin the dough because I made the calzone today and it was delicious!
